Chapter Eight

A grim-faced Dante paced the substation parking lot. The minute Logan parked the car he was at my door, yanking it open. “Are you all right, querida?”

“I’m fine.” I reached up and gave him a smooch. “Did someone accuse you of plotting to kill El Jefe too?”

Dante’s lips drew back in a feral snarl. “Yes, Chief Deputy Morgan. He’s demanding I report to his office by noon, or an arrest warrant will be issued.”

“But you never fired your weapon, and the entire incident is on tape,” I protested.

Sergeant Bergman inserted, “Only Sergeant Dillion, Dante, and I have a copy of the tape. Chief Deputy Morgan has no evidence from the crime scene.”

“I’ll bet you a hundred bucks that Rachael’s so-called pictures don’t exist,” I added.

Dante ran a hand through his hair. “Chief Deputy Morgan has used an AI program to fabricate evidence before. He’s probably done it again.”

“But he’s getting sloppy. I was in the hospital on the fifth, not dancing the night away with El Jefe.”

A dangerous smile curved Lucas’s mouth. “He also doesn’t know Mom; Julie, and Gemma flew to Hawaii for a ten-day recuperative cruise during those three weeks.”

God, talk about a wonderful time. Great food, being pampered, lying in the sun and just talking without a single reporter jumping out at us. “I’d like to see the chief deputy’s face when he finds out he can’t prove I was with El Jefe.”

Jacob made a rude noise. “His house of cards is about to come tumbling down. All the Alpha Dogs need to do is give it a little shove.”

“Alpha Dogs?” Dante’s eyebrows rose.

“Dad was the leader of a Force RECON team that went by the name of Alpha Dogs,” I replied. “When he started doing investigative work for the government and other people, he started Alpha Dogs Investigations.” I patted Dante’s fine ass. “Don’t worry, you’ll fit right in.”

Lucas snorted. “We’ll see.”

“What kind of evidence have you collected, Delgado?” Nate interjected.

Dante held up a USB drive. “Some of the evidence my father had collected before he was murdered. Pictures of the hit-and-run scene. Documents proving Morgan works for the Zetos brothers and was involved in eight or more murders. A copy of the original police report on my parents’ murders, and everything I could dig up on Morgan. He has a villa in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and five million dollars in a secret account in the Caymans.”

“Did the Flagstaff officer explain why he thought your parents’ deaths were a simple hit-and-run?” Devon wanted to know.

“Officer Flake died in a suspicious hunting accident before I could question him. The Flagstaff Police Department’s computers were hit with a virus six months ago, and the report vanished from the database,” Dante replied bleakly.

Jacob let out a low whistle. “And the physical evidence?”

“There was a fire in the property room and all the evidence collected from the scene was destroyed.”

“He’s tying up loose ends. He will be coming for you now,” Devon said.

Unguarded violence in his eyes, Dante smiled.
